City’s Hazendal underground cabling project nearing completion

The City of Cape Town’s R9 million underground electricity cabling project in Hazendal is expected to be completed mid-November. The undergrounding of cables and broader network upgrades is part of our ongoing investments to our electricity grid in areas across the metro
‘I am so pleased to have seen for myself the progress in Hazendal. We are well on the way to completing this project with about R6,3m of the R9m budget already spent. Our dedicated teams are working efficiently, carrying out the work with minimum disruption to customers. This investment, along with others, is essential to the security of our infrastructure, ensuring reliable energy supply to residents and businesses.
'As a theft deterrent, our teams make use of undergrounding and alternative cabling solutions for streetlight and electricity distribution networks due to the lower resale value. Our transition to more modern and resilient infrastructure is an important part of our long-term vision to improve supply and to reduce the cost associated with theft and vandalism of our infrastructure. Thank you to the teams who are working hard to make the successful outcome of this project a reality and to the residents for their support and cooperation through the implementation of this important project,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg.
Benefits of underground power infrastructure:
• Underground cable infrastructure is less susceptible to weather related faults such as storms and falling trees.
• Underground cabling reduces the risk of electrical accidents from people, cars and animals encountering the power lines. It also holds the potential to reduce the risk of vandalism and theft.
• Underground cable eliminates the need for poles and overhead power lines in an area, which greatly improves the visual appeal of an urban area.
